"Painting for Children" An Invitational Exhibit of art by Children’s Book Illustrators (Aug 1 – Aug 31)
The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library (www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org) is thrilled to present a very special exhibit, "Painting for Children" - a celebration of play, whimsy, laughter and fun as seen through the eyes of North Carolina's talented Children's Book illustrators and authors through Aug. in the Reeves Gallery at the library, 158 West St., Pittsboro (542-3524). The exhibit may be viewed during Library hours (Mon 10-6, Tue10-8, Wed 10-6, Thu 10-6, Fri 10-6, Sat 9-5).
The invitational exhibit presents the work of twelve artists and writers, many of whom hold national recognition as some of the most talented illustrators and authors of children’s books. Others are just beginning this wonderful adventure. The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library welcome author/illustrators- Clay Carmichael, Stacye Leanza, Pamela Pease, Leah Palmer Preiss, Sudie Rakusin, Miriam Sagasti; illustrators Kathryn Armstrong, Rebecca Guay, Jan Lawrence; and children’s book authors Forrest Greenslade, Louise Hawes, and Lavenia Holloway Womble.
The authors and illustrators have graciously agreed to read from their children’s books for a special library storytime Saturday, Aug. 25th from 1pm to 3pm in the Reeves Auditorium. The Community is also invited to meet the artists and authors at the Pittsboro General Store Café from 3:30pm. to 5pm. The exhibit, the children’s story time event and the “Meet the Illustrators and Authors” book signing and reception is free and open to the public. Directions to The Pittsboro General Store Café are available at http://www.thegeneralstorecafe.com/home.html. It is an easy walk from the library.
For questions about story time please contact: Bett Essen, Children's librarian, 542-3524. If you have an interest in exhibiting your artwork or have questions about the exhibit or reception, please contact Leslie Palmer, Gallery Coordinator. (LesPalmer@aol.com or 919-929-9268).

"My Life in France" is Book Discussion for August 6
The Pittsboro Memorial Library book club's August selection is "My Life in France" by Julia Child, assisted by her great-nephew Alex Prud'homme. With Julia Child's death in 2004 at age 91, Prud'homme completed this playful memoir of the famous chef's first, formative sojourn in France with her new husband, Paul Child, in 1949. The result was Julia Child's bringing her joie de vivre—and classic recipes—to American kitchens for decades. Join the discussion on Monday, August 6, at 7:00 PM in the Reeves Gallery at the library,158 West St, Pittsboro (542-3524).
New members and one-time visitors are welcome. For more information, call the library or visit www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org.

"Chatham Plein Air" Art Exhibit (July 2 - July 28)
The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library (www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org) will feature art by members of Chatham Plein Air. The paintings, inspired by nature and our local rural landscapes, can be viewed through July in the Reeves Gallery at the library, 158 West St., Pittsboro (542-3524), during library hours (Mon 10-6, Tue10-8, Wed 10-6, Thu 10-6, Fri 10-6, Sat 9-5).
"En plein air" is a French expression which means "in the open air," and is used to describe the artist's technique of painting in the outside environment rather than indoors. Painting outdoors offers ever changing possibilities and challenges the artist to concentrate every sensory nerve on the information in front them, exploring their subject while ignoring nature's and human distractions.
The Chatham Plein Air exhibit, the third annual sponsored by The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library, brings together fifteen artists working in a variety of medium including pastels, oils, acrylics and watercolors. The uniqueness of this exhibit is that although the artists meet to paint each week at the same location, each painting depicts the artist's own personal, unique sense of place.
Chatham Plein Air was organized three years ago by Studio Tour Artist, Cindy Bainbridge. Rita Baldwin, another of the original members, will be featured as a new artist on the Chatham Studio Tour during the Chatham Artists Guild New and Returning Artists Exhibit in the Reeves Gallery in Oct. through Nov. Other Chatham Plein Air members whose work can be viewed at the current library show are: Bonnie Seyford, Phyllis Stephens, Dan Vaughan, Anne Johnson, Wendy Musser, Jane Lamm, Patricia Pittman, Kim Werfel, Karen Meredith, Laura Azzi, Nerys Levy, Ann Hair, and Jean Scholz.
Chatham Plein Air meets every Tuesday morning at locations in and around Chatham County. For more information contact Cindy Bainbridge (444-4701) or email mompom@earthlink.net.
If you have an interest in exhibiting your artwork or have questions about the exhibit, please contact Leslie Palmer, Gallery Coordinator. (LesPalmer@aol.com or 919-929-9268).

Collaboration is Theme for Friends Fundraising
The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library (www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org) and Chatham Marketplace (www.chathammarketplace.coop) collaborated for a 1% Monday on May 7th. This was the third in a series of community collaborations in support of the new Chatham Community Library. The first was a Burrito Bash! at the Pittsboro General Store in February, while the second was the Friends' Community Read Finale in April, which featured a presentation of Because of Winn-Dixie by Ellen Bland's CCCC Readers Theater Class, funded by a grassroots grant from the Chatham County Arts Council, a partner of the North Carolina Arts Council.
The next collaboration will be with The Abundance Foundation (www.theabundancefoundation.org), Saturday, September 15, at the Piedmont BioFuels plant in Pittsboro.
1% of the proceeds of all food and grocery items purchased went toward the new Chatham Community Library scheduled to open on the grounds of Central Carolina Community College in early 2009. It was a day of fun, food, and information.
Storyteller, Calista Moon, spun her magic with the preschool set, Jamie Fiocco, Manager of Fearrington's McIntyre's Bookstore gave an exciting talk on local authors, John Tilford shared his guitar playing talents and local author, Louise Hawes, spoke of her new book on short stories, Anteaters Don't Dream, and gave practical advice on writing.
The Friends thank the Chatham Community for supporting this event and Mary Da Mare, Manager of Chatham Marketplace, for hosting this Co-op event.

"A Thousand Splendid Suns" is Book Discussion for July 2
The Pittsboro Memorial Library book club's July selection is "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini, author of "The Kite Runner." Hosseini packed the Fearrington Barn to bursting during his visit for the 2005 Community Read finale. "A Thousand Splendid Suns" has received terrific reviews, even from those curmudgeons at Kirkus. "A fine risk-taking novel about
two victimized but courageous Afghan women, another artistic triumph, and surefire bestseller, for this fearless writer." Join the discussion on Monday, July 2, at 7:00 PM in the Reeves Gallery at the library,158 West St, Pittsboro (542-3524).
New members and one-time visitors are welcome. For more information, contact Jennifer Gillis at the library or visit www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org.

"King

Discussion
for June

The
Pittsboro
Memorial
Library
book
club's
June
selection is "King
Leoplold's
Ghost"
by Adam
Hochschild. In

as the
European
powers
were
carving
up Africa,
King
Leopold
II of
Belgium
seized
the
vast and

Theroux
said of
this
book,
"Much
more
than a
book about
Africa,
it puts
European
and
American
history and
human
rights
into
perspective.
It is a
chronicle of
true
heroes
and
despicable
villains

of
the strangest

violent
episodes
of
empire
the world
has
known."
