a visit by award-winning children’s book author Jeanne
Birdsall, author of the Penderwicks series. She has just come out
with the third book in the series, The Penderwicks at Point Mouette. I
strongly recommend this gentle, lively series for middle-grade readers
to any parent or grandparent. It would make a wonderful read-aloud as
well. Think of a modern-day “Little Women,” but with more adventure. Ms.
Birdsall will be making her ONLY triangle-area appearance at our library
on Friday May 20. Copies of the book will be
available for purchase. |
Thursday, May 26

A
visit by acclaimed young adult author Sarah Dessen, who will be
discussing and reading from her 10th novel, “What Happened to
Goodbye.” Sarah Dessen writes novels about some of the challenges
today’s teens face, and two of her books have been on the New York Times
bestseller list. Ms. Dessen will be here on Thursday, May 26 at 7 p.m.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase. |

by author Rosecrans Baldwin. His book “You Lost Me There” was
selected by NPR as one of its best books of summer in 2010. Mr. Baldwin
will speak at 7 p.m., with a book-signing to follow. Attendees will also
learn details of the adult summer reading program. Copies of his book
will be available for purchase. |
Saturday, June 18
11 am |
Saturday, June 18 will be especially for the younger
crowd, with local children’s authors and a special musical program
offered by our very own Carrie Boone. Children will be able to
register for the summer reading program. This special program will be
held between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the library. |
Thursday, JUNE 23
7:30-9:00pm |
NC author SUZY BARILE will discuss her book
Undaunted Heart, The True Story of a Southern Belle and a Yankee
General.
Just after the Civil War, with Sherman’s victorious army patrolling
the streets of the Chapel Hill, an unlikely romance grows between
the daughter of the President of the University of NC, a former
governor of NC, and a young general who is part of the Union’
occupation forces. This grew into a passionate and very
controversial love story of two young people who had spent the war
on opposite sides and whose lives were forever altered.
Suzy Barile is the great-great-granddaughter of the couple, Ella Swain
and Smith Atkins, and tells the fascinating true story of their famous
courtship and marriage. |

The Elephant and The Dragon by Robyn Meredith
(Non-Fiction)
This
book is the essential guide
to understanding how India and China are reshaping our
world. With labor now unbound from geographic borders, we're
seeing startling shifts in how—and where—nearly everything
we buy is made. In a compelling mix of history and
on-the-ground reporting, veteran journalist Robyn Meredith
untangles the complex web of business and politics, as well
as environmental and cultural issues that entwine India,
China, and the West. She also outlines how
Americans—business leaders, workers, politicians, even
parents—can understand the vast changes coming and thrive in
this new age. |

Serena
by
Ron Rash (Fiction)
The year is 1929, and
newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton travel from Boston to
the North Carolina mountains where they plan to create a
timber empire. Although George has already lived in the camp
long enough to father an illegitimate child, Serena is new
to the mountains--but she soon shows herself to be the equal
of any man, overseeing crews, hunting rattle-snakes, even
saving her husband's life in the wilderness. Together this
lord and lady of the woodlands ruthlessly kill or vanquish
all who fall out of favor. Yet when Serena learns that she
will never bear a child, she sets out to murder the son
George fathered without her. Mother and child begin a
struggle for their lives, and when Serena suspects George is
protecting his illegitimate family, the Pembertons' intense,
passionate marriage starts to unravel as the story moves
toward its shocking reckoning. |

American Lion
by Jon Meacham (Non Fiction)
Born in 1767 along the border between
North and South Carolina, Andrew Jackson experienced the
American War of Independence as a brutal civil war.
Ill-treated by British officers and imprisoned near
Charleston, Jackson was the only member of his immediate
family to survive the conflict. He migrated to
Nashville, where he established himself as a lawyer,
planter, politician and militia officer. Jackson fell in
love with Rachel Donelson Robards, a woman he courted
and lived with before she was officially divorced from
her first husband. The Jacksons had a happy marriage,
but whispers about the origins of their relationship
dogged them until Rachel’s death in December 1828. |

Come share a most enjoyable evening with North Carolina poet and
free-lance writer
Judy Hogan
speaking on
“My Life and Economics as an Aging Poet-Farmer”.
Judy Hogan’s passion to write led to valuing her time more than
money. In 1998 she began farming to grow her own food and stay
healthy and, of necessity, began inventing some very creative
“solutions” to life’s challenges. Judy helped found the NC
Writers Network, has published five books of poetry and two
non-fiction works, writes regularly for the Chatham County
Line, and teaches creative writing at Central Carolina
Community College. Free and open to the public.
The Friends annual meeting and election of
officers will be held prior to the program.

The Judgement of Paris
by Ross King (Non-Fiction) An engrossing account of the years from 1863
- when paintings denied entry into the French Academy's yearly Salon
were shown at the Salon des Refusés - to 1874, the date of the first
Impressionist exhibition. King follows the careers of two formidable,
and very different, artists: Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, a
conservative painter celebrated for detailed historical subjects, and
Édouard Manet, whose painting Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe caused an uproar
at the Salon des Refusés. Many other artists of the day, among them
Courbet, Degas, Morisot, Monet and Cézanne, are included in King's
compelling narrative, and the story is further enhanced by the author's
vivid portrayal of artistic life in Paris during a turbulent era that
saw the siege of the city by the Prussians and the fall of Napoleon III.
