From the First Newsletter of the Friends:

For the growth and development of the human mind
For the exploration of far away lands and planets
For the opportunity for research and study
For the sheer joy and pleasure that reading brings

We dedicate this library.

These words were part of the dedication ceremony when the Pittsboro Memorial Library opened on November 10, 1974. The project was begun through the benevolence of Marvin C. Reeves who left a generous sum in his will for a library building in Pittsboro. His bequest and an additional gift from his children formed the foundation for contributions which came from individuals as well as business and service organizations in eastern Chatham County.

In October, 1986, the Reeves Auditorium was added and the former meeting room was renovated to provide a separate area for children's books. This allowed for expansion in the main area for the adult collection as well as remodeling for more office and work space. Donations from the Reeves Foundation and the Reeves family, the Pittsboro Development Corporation and $30,000 from federal funds obtained through the Library Services and Construction Act made it all possible. Funds for remodeling the circulation desk, shelving, chairs and kitchen appliances were raised from community donations under the auspices of the "Friends." The 2,048 sq. ft. auditorium, with a seating capacity of 100, is used for story telling programs, lectures, concerts, puppet shows, exhibits, demonstrations, films and community meetings.

For the broadening of one's literary background
For the development of unbiased attitudes and opinions
For the promotion of learning
For the companionship of a good book
